Addiction and other mental illnesses often play a role in child custody and divorce cases. Roughly half of the population will experience a mental health challenge at some point. But there’s a long-standing stigma around mental health. For many, it’s something we just don’t talk about.
From childhood on, most Hoosiers have been trained in first aid. We know a little bit about everything from cleaning wounds to CPR. But scarcely any of us are comfortable with conversations about mental health problems. We struggle when faced with anyone exhibiting a mental health challenge or crisis.
To address that problem, Donna J. Bays has become certified to provide Mental Health First Aid. She qualified for that certification through training provided by Kids Voice of Indiana and Pastor David Greene of Purpose of Life Ministries. Donna now has the practical skills to provide initial aid for people with signs of substance abuse and other mental health challenges.
